PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number)

A PTIN is the number every paid tax return preparer must have and put on the returns they sign. It is renewed every year through the IRS.

Having a PTIN lets you prepare returns for pay, but by itself it gives no right to represent clients in audits or collection. Representation rights come from a license such as EA, CPA or attorney, or limited rights under the Annual Filing Season Program.

Example. Theo has a PTIN and prepares returns at Nadia's firm. He cannot sign a Form 2848 to argue an audit until he passes the SEE.
