EA vs CPA: which is better for US tax jobs and remote outsourcing firms?
2026-11-03 · 4 minute read · By Binod Raj Singh, CPA

The EA is a federal tax credential you can earn in months with no degree rule. The CPA is a state license that covers audit and accounting too.
Both credentials open doors to US tax work, including at firms in India, Nepal and the Philippines that prepare returns for US clients. They are built for different careers.
The Enrolled Agent
- Issued by the IRS, valid in every state.
- Unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS on any tax matter.
- Three exam parts, no degree or experience requirement.
- Focused entirely on tax: individuals, businesses and IRS procedures.
The CPA
- Issued by a state board, with education and experience rules.
- Covers audit, financial reporting and attest work, which only CPAs may sign, as well as tax.
- Four exam sections, each 4 hours.
- Wider career range: audit, advisory, corporate finance and tax.
Which suits you
If you want to work in US tax preparation and IRS representation, the EA is the faster route and is well recognized for that work. If you want audit, financial reporting or a broad accounting career, aim for the CPA. Many tax professionals hold both, and the EA's tax knowledge carries straight into the CPA's REG section.
