Which state board is best for international CPA candidates?

There is no single best board. Match your education, SSN status and experience against six rules and the right board usually picks itself.

Every international candidate asks this, and every coaching brochure has a different answer. The board that suits you depends on your own file. Work through these six questions in order.

  1. Does it test abroad? The board must take part in international testing if you want to sit outside the US. Alabama, Idaho, North Carolina and the Virgin Islands currently do not.
  2. How many hours to sit? Most boards need 120 semester hours to sit. A few ask for more. Compare this with your evaluation.
  3. Which evaluator does it accept? Some accept only NIES, others a list of services. Use one the board names.
  4. SSN, citizenship and residencyCheck both the exam rules and the license rules.
  5. Experience for the licenseWho may verify it, how long it must be, and whether work outside the US counts.
  6. Fees and paperworkApplication, section and license fees, and how documents must be sent.

Boards candidates often compare

Montana, Guam, Alaska, Washington, Colorado, Illinois and New York are among the boards international candidates commonly look at, usually because of their SSN, residency or education rules. Each has its own mix of strengths, and rules change, so read the board's current pages rather than a ranked list.

A practical shortcut

Your exam scores can usually be transferred later, but choosing the right board first saves time and fees.
